Re: Need a bee suit recommendation

Great. Thanks for the tip all. I have a few more trips out to the bee yard before winter and I'll be dreaming of a new suit for Spring!

    Need a bee suit recommendation

I've decided I will start next year off with a new bee suit. The problem with mine is that it's just so dang hot, even if I'm wearing only a t shirt under the jacket on a 70 degree day. I'm in...

    Re: A new honey color

We haven't done a late August spin before. I know we have knotweed here so I"m thinking that must be it.

    A new honey color

I'm near Seattle and my honey has always been a light color, as it was earlier in the summer. I figure it's probably a combination of blackberry and wildflower.

I just harvested again with frames...
  5. Re: What flowers leave this mark on the thorax

I would guess it's the morning glory that this is coming from rather than jewelweed. Thanks.
  6. Re: What flowers leave this mark on the thorax

I'm getting the white stripes too and I'm on the East side of Lake Washington (Rose Hill, Kirkland). Supposedly jewelweed is not supposed to be here and the county wants to be notified if found.

White area on back - is this normal?

    51187

I'm finding quite a few bees like the image posted above. Is this just something they are bringing in, like pollen, or something more dire?

    Sorry the images are blurry.

Re: Transfering OH to a 'regular' box

I don't often panic, but when there's a bee in my suit I make the exception because it's hard to know how many are inside the veil and it becomes difficult to know if those bees buzzing around you...

Transfering OH to a 'regular' box

I've enjoyed my OH all summer but decided it was time to move it to a bigger home. Easy right?

I tried that but forgot that you can't cut the finger joints first!
  11. A cove cutting jig for making bee box handles

I was not satisfied with the different handles I have on my bee hive boxes. But I found one that was quick to make and made a few minor changes to suit my purposes. I'm pretty happy with it and I'll...

    Re: Making a Bee Hive

Thanks. The arch top hive needed freshening up at the beginning of the season. I usually don't spend a lot of time making my boxes pretty, but that one is and exception.

It's called a Resp-o-Rator. I made a short video about it when I first got it:

    Making a Bee Hive

I had an emergency on my hands when I had to re-capture bees that had swarmed and left their hive. Having run out of hive boxes, I put them in a cardboard box and went to work in the shop making a...

  18. First time capture - an unscheduled Saturday task

I guess one bad thing about having such a great year is that they are filling up the boxes and at least one has now swarmed. Luckily I happened to look up at the right place at the right time and...

    Re: squaring box corners

All of the suggestions here are valid and you may already have finished this project, but, If you cut two rectangular board to the dimensions of the inside of your boxes, that will insure your boxes...

    Re: Making a Queen Catcher

I'm on the lookout for a cloth or nylon type of mesh. I already had the screen so I used it and it doesn't seem to be a problem when I tried it.

All true and a skill worth having. Of course, I am always making things in my workshop. This is just another thing.

    Gray Pollen?

I'm in the Seattle area and I'm used to seeing orange colored pollen come in - although I'm not sure what plant(s) it comes from. But today I noticed a darker, kind of gray colored pollen. I've never...
