Re: What happens if a hive is full late season?

I would place each foundationless frame between two capped frames, not just drawn frames.
  2. Re: How much honey to leave for winter if I'm trying to not feed

Find out your area's rule of thumb from a local bee club for weight. Your mild temperatures are not necessarily requiring less stores for over winter success. Also dependent upon cluster...

Re: Saskatraz Yard Prep and inbreeding

Best of luck, and DO update us on your evaluation of the Saskatraz QN's, as some of us are slow to jump on the wagon. Meanwhile, many have these QN's, but have no information/evaluation released as...

    Re: 1st time extracting honey

Have an empty super with a top & bottom cover (2 migratory covers/plywood/bath towel, etc.) to put frames in after removing bees to keep the bees off them.

Re: Saskatraz Yard Prep and inbreeding

You might consider slowing down the timeline & evaluating this seasons queens for a few years to verify you want the II Saskatraz QN prior to spending the $.
I have been patiently waiting for the...
  7. Re: queen not out of cage after 3 days; should I panic?

No, don't panic. I'd check tomorrow for release; if released, get the cage out & close up. You don't need to be inspecting.

Do figure out the feeder issue. I would expect a gallon to last ~week...

Re: Introducing queen into queenless nuc

Option #2: Make up a fresh queenless nuc, introduce the queen in the manner you prefer; newspaper combine the 10 day queenless nuc back to the parent hive.

    Re: repeated swarming

If entrance is significantly reduced, opening that up may reduce congestion, which may help...may not.

Re: Removing Frames, a Couple at a Time...

Fresh wax/new wax is nice & white. Will be fine in 4 weeks. You might consider adding another super now.

    Re: Fly-back splits, Ray's way

    The 4 frames listed above:
    1. open nectar
    2. drawn empty comb
    3. frame w/ queen
    4 capped brood
This is 2 frames of brood & bees...a lot like "ONE or two frames of open brood & adhearing bees"

    Re: transporting hive

Yes, much better to feed inside the hive. Place your inverted mason jar over the center hole of the inner cover. Bottom board, hive box w/frames, inner cover, empty box with feeder, then...

Re: selling nucs to complete newbies

I would agree with your concern. Long term reputation (who knows what will be said about your bees good/bad from any buyer) somewhat depends on both the bees you provide & the keeper after the...

    Re: Split question

How many frames of brood & bees are there? (ie. how many frames are you expecting to have for each split?) You would want 3 per nuc / minimum 2 really good brood frames per nuc. You may not have...
  17. Re: Help!! I know nothing, or just enough to get me into trouble

Get a lot of reading/learning done.

Measure your boxes to know if you have deeps or mediums to ensure compatible with the nuc; verify the frame size of the purchased nuc (likely deep). Verify you...

    Re: Removing frames from broodnest

Leave it alone. Concentrate on successfully overwintering them. When the colony is above this box next spring (at time of box reversal/before cluster moves back down, etc.) take out the two...

    Re: Honey Supers

Definitely less work/cleanup if all extracting is done once. Your bees likely could store more honey during the flow if they have drawn comb. ie. you could extract now and put the super back on,...
  22. Re: more frequent hives checks OK if I don't use smoke?

You don't need to smoke them until you need to smoke them. Hive strength/time of year(flow/dearth) have large influences on whether I wish I had a smoker already lit when it's not.

Re: Queen excluder and top entrances

I think the general thought is there are cheaper ways to create an upper entrance than a snellgrove board.

I ran a swarm hive one summer with no bottom board (bottom box sat on solid surface),...

    Re: New Hives

You can pop the top and fill in less than 20 seconds, can protect bees with inner cover over most of hive...I'd keep it full, just do it when not a complete down pour.
