    Re: Mouse cleanup question

Thanks Matt, I appreciate the reply. I'll clean it as suggested. I went back out and covered the openings with wire. I trashed most of the combs, there are a few that I saved but not too many.

    Mouse cleanup question

After some bitter -30 to -40 windchill days, its a nice 50 degrees outside. I decided to enjoy the warmth and check on my 2 hives. One was busy cleaning house/orienting and looks to have a strong...

    Re: Dadant & Mann-lake tbh

Building would be ideal, but then I have to find someone to do that for me. I don't do such things, if I did I would have built these instead of buying hives.

Last time I called Dadant they don't...

    Dadant & Mann-lake tbh

Does anyone have a Dadant TBH & Mann Lake TBH and could share their experience with these two hives? I was wondering if anyone has used the two and could comment if the bars would be...

In case anyone actually read this and is interested...

SUCCESS! Checked on this hive on 6/12 and found brood! And a lot of pollen and nectar stores. I didn't find the new queen yet, but then I...

    Re: Question on wintering.

Hi Jayson. I'm in 5b and have overwintered now. I did fail my first year, but I realized in my second year that the hive wasn't as strong as I had thought going into winter and I gave the 2nd year...

Re: How long until I see capped brood?

I'm still new at this, and used Bush's website to develop a calendar of what to expect when I split my hive. Mine didn't go quite as I planned (bees started with a new egg instead of a new larvae),...
  10. Re: How do you make a split if you can't find the queen?

Question: I have seen the recommendation of turning the hives a few times now. Is this basically to force them to reorient?

I ask because I did a split in early May with my top bars. Turning...

    Re: Ants and earwigs

How about a sprinkling of diatomaceous earth sprinkled on the ground around the base or legs of the hive? I used it my first year while I was feeding a newly installed package. It really seemed to...

Re: Split, queen cell & bee math.

Thank you! I am constantly browsing and reading websites, but I don't think I have run across that one yet. That is very helpful and is reassuring that I am understanding the process. Assuming they...

Split, queen cell & bee math.

Be gentle :) I havenít posted much in the past for fear of asking dumb questions, but I could use a little reassurance that I'm on the right track this time or correcting if I'm way off base in my...

Re: What happened to the queen

I'll throw my experience last year out to you as another possibility.

I only have a couple of years experience, so am quite new at this too. But I installed two packages last year. Both did well...

    Re: Milkweed, swamp milkweed

I was taught that if you pinch common milkweed when its 5 to 6 inches tall, it will encourage bushy growth.

It may come up next spring. I have planted seed a little too late in the spring...
