    Re: recommended Honey Gates?

That might be it Marti, loosen the pivot to find that sweet spot that allows the gate to stay flat on the O ring when closed. Too tight ,it bends the gate. I like the Mann Lake gate that uses a...

Re: moving cells on plastic foundation

Most of the swarm cells are rear the bottom of the frame and bend around the bottom bar attached to it. You can cut some of the wood along with the cell, it works most times

Re: Small swarm on suicide mission

Put an excluder under the box, let the queen out of the cage.Take it out after a few days, she is most likely a virgin being a small swarm, she will need to get mated

Re: moving cells on plastic foundation

The cool thing about this hobby , is your learning all the time, and what you heard is not true, you cut the cells off and put them on frames in nucs. Cut the cells out carefully around the outside...
  7. Re: I'm clueless about swarming but I did get to see a queen hatch

Yes leave the other cells in there, after you saw a virgin running around, maybe you will catch an after swarm,,,,,,,,,,,,,Pete

    Re: Three supers

No problem with crystallized honey in the comb, I have an old chest freezer with two 100 watt light bulbs and a themostat set to 104 degrees. Two days and it is liquid again, mine is used for 5 gal...

    Re: My queen flew away

I have had them fly away a few times too, mostly from trying to put them back after marking them ( I only mark the laying queens ). So the Queen has oriented to the box at some time. I have read on...

    Re: Mini Mating Nucs

To overwinter them I made DeCoates nucs to hold 13 frames each, 10 3/4" x 20"x 6 5/8"h, 3 boxes high with the top box honey. I have 3 set ups like this, 111 frames = 29 mini`s for stock in the...

Re: Why would a hive swarm multiple times

I use disposable scalpel blades. Would help to heat it and bend it on a slight angle to get a flat cut between the cell and the foundation, any white you see is RJ, she already had her fill of that....

    Re: My OB Hive

Your right Michael, you get to see it all. For the past 3 years I have been pulling the queen and putting her in a nuc, and putting a grafted cell in there, one year I got 27 frames of brood and bees...

    Re: Caging and attendants

No , Put a drop of honey on the cage, that should last her till you put her in the hive. Then the bees in the hive will feed her. Attendants don`t belong in their hive, they will accept her better...

Re: Why would a hive swarm multiple times

Let me add, if you pull the queen and take the cells and leave 2, this time of year you will get a nice honey crop. All those capped brood will emerge and no brood to feed for the next 20 or so days,...

Re: Why would a hive swarm multiple times

Re: Why would a hive swarm multiple times

Swarms are not that bad, if you catch it. What I do is make nucs out of the cells, nice big fat queens, hairy legs and all. Use the whole frame or cut them out. Yes you can cut them off of plastic....

    Re: Mating Nuc Questions

That`s it. Make supers for them to add as they grow, stop the swarming. I made mine using DeCoates plan turned 90 degrees with ledge on the long sides. Drill 1" holes on the ends with screen for vent....

    Re: Mating Nuc Questions

I see you need comb now, tie two end for end as stated. But you`ll need them for next year, build growing boxes. I made 3 that hold 13 frames each last year and put a swarm in 3 boxes high, this year...
