    Re: Mann Lake Alert

I ordered some supers which came in a reasonable amount of time, but were cut and drilled wrong. My husband managed to adapt them to get them together, but I emailed the Minnesota branch. It’s the...

    Re: Recommendation on Robbing

When I have had robbing, generally because I forgot to put a screen or reducer on a new split, I’ve covered the whole front of the hive with a cloth or towel, tucked in at the sides and bottom. The...

Re: Help! Bad at seeing eggs

I keep a flashlight in my bee suit pocket. The sun isn’t reliable here, plus I’m often in the shade.

    Re: Tool bucket replacement ideas

I use a sturdy foldable tote for groceries, nice handles, big enough to put frames in. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91fCrHf5JDL._AC_SX679_.jpg
Light weight, can fold away in my...
  5. Re: Can hive go from building comb to starving in three days?

I’m in portland, too. In April we had fine weather and lots of nectar coming in from the maple blossom. I took honey off the first week of May.
If you had enough bees to take care of the brood AND...
  6. Re: Will lack of early morning sun negatively affect an apiary?

For several years Iíve kept a hive outside my studio so I can watch while I work. Itís on a deck facing east, under a large ash tree: not much direct sun. My other hives are in back with a full...

    Drone layer-combine with nuc?

My first inspection today turned up one hive with a ton of drone cells and nothing else. Should I combine with a nuc I have? Do I need to find the drone queen first? Should I freeze those frames of...

Re: How many honey supers do I need?

I have mostly 8 frame mediums. I have 4 hives with a bottom deep and a medium and 2 deep nucs. I havenít made up my mind yet which I like best, deep or mediums for the brood box. I donít have much...

How many honey supers do I need?

Iíve finally figured out how to keep my bees alive and have 12 colonies this year, up from around 3 in previous years. This is a serious quantity of hives so I need to up my game on equipment...

    Re: Managing spring build up

How do you cut plastic foundation?
  11. Re: We had it figured out until we didn't have it figured out

Iím going to get some flack for this, I know. But when I started with bees, as a 60 year old, sedentary, out of shape woman, I quickly discovered I couldnít lift the boxes and no one in my family...

I use these from amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007TB6XAE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Re: Installing Nuc in Horizontal Langstroth

I use bamboo skewers, from Amazon, horizontally in the deep frames. I sharpen both ends in a pencil apsharpener and flex them into the holes already in the frames. The tension keeps them fine.

    Nucs not taking feed

I have 4 nucs I started later than usual-first week of July. The queens are laying , everything looks good and Iíve been feeding them right along. Trouble is, theyíre not storing anything much. My...

Re: How do I relax w/bees?

It takes time and experience to get comfortable with bees. Everyone’s schedule will be different. Keep doing what you’re doing and each year will get easier.
There’s a way you move around bees that...
  16. Re: Want to notch 2 deep boxes and make nucs, but canít find the queen

So yesterday I checked the now divided hive. The top, which I primed with notched brood: no queen cells, a nice big frame of eggs, and no visible queen.
So I, reluctantly, remembering the number of...

    Re: Find the queen

This is a good idea. This method is used to train lots of medical specialties, for instance, looking at different pictures of skin cancers until the eye picks them up without thought. There are apps...
  18. Re: Want to notch 2 deep boxes and make nucs, but canít find the queen

So many fun ideas! I need more hives to try all these ideas with. I wonder how to find another yard for some more hives in my mid-sized city.
  19. Re: Want to notch 2 deep boxes and make nucs, but canít find the queen

This hive was a nuc last fall, from a larger hive that didn’t winter over. Neither the nuc nor the dead hive have ever been particularly nice to work. As in any abusive relationship I’ve spent way...
  20. Re: Want to notch 2 deep boxes and make nucs, but canít find the queen

Saltybee, so I’m letting the nurse bees that come with the new frames plus the field force of the mean hive raise the new queens in the old spot? Is that a strong enough hive?
    Part 2 is, I can’t...
  21. Re: Want to notch 2 deep boxes and make nucs, but canít find the queen

Saltybee, I think this is what I want “You are using the bees from the queen you do not want, to raise the QCs from the queen you like while leaving her alone.”
It seems like the least messing with...
  22. Re: Want to notch 2 deep boxes and make nucs, but canít find the queen

So, can I put a QE on top of my 2 deeps, then shake the bees off some medium frames of brood and eggs from another hive, add stores around them and then wait a day or overnight for nurse bees to...
  23. Want to notch 2 deep boxes and make nucs, but canít find the queen

I have looked through the hive 3 times and failed to find the queen. Yet she is there laying. Is there a way I can make queen cells anyway and split into nucs?
Iím short extra deep equipment. I...

    Re: Probably over thinking this.

I use cardboard. Trouble with carpet is, if it get buried the plastic parts will never rot. You’ll never get a shovel in the ground without cursing .

Re: OTS queens and medium frames?

This is the answer I might have been looking for. Iím thinking a split of 3-5 medium frames wouldnít be big enough? So I go for 8? Or would 5 work but Iíd really have to watch them to keep them from...
