    Re: Late season issues...

IMO I would say the queens have slowed down in Ohio. When she slows down that means their won't be many eggs. Did you check every frame? Also, the queens body size slims down as she slows down, so...
  3. Re: Advice on finding properties to place beehives?

I presently have (4) bee yards. One is on my property. Another is on a friends 10 acres, he then sold the place and the new owners wanted me to keep the bees there. The 3rd I provided pollination...

Re: Hands off Beekeeping.....for the most part.

Our inspections are done every 7 to 10 days Spring to Fall. A lot can change in that time and we've been able to stop some problems from becoming bigger ones.

Re: Honey Supers full, again.. what to do?

This time of year I'm managing honey stores more than managing the bee's. Some I have to remove frames to keep them from getting honey bound and others I have to give a frame or two of honey. I...

    Re: Bees in the rain

Looks like they were cleaning out a honey-super. So more than likely they were there prior to the rain. A light rain won't stop them.

    Re: Mosquito spray companies

In our County we register every one of our apiaries with the mosquito authority. I'd probably have to contact the independent companies and let them know where your bee's are. A few years back I...

    Re: Should I harvest?

You didn't mention how many supers you had on each hive. If you only have one then there's a few things to consider. If you extract the entire super you may end up feeding more sugar water than you...

    Re: Apivar and Supers

... and that's exactly why I went from a deep brood box, to a deep and a medium. All my honey boxes are mediums and I could never get them all pulled before I planned to treat. So I gave them (1)...

Re: Existing Hive, No Brood, No Eggs

You mentioned you've been away, but didn't say how long. You may very well have a queen in the midst of mating flights or just isn't laying yet. Normally cells would have been drawn if the hive...
  12. Re: Running single deep and medium for brood

Yeah, the cluster tends to move up over the course of the winter, so the medium would be switched to the bottom come Springtime.
  13. Running single deep and medium for brood

So this is what I've faced most every year. I went from double deep brood boxes to single deeps, for a number of reasons. I use mediums for honey supers. This time of year the nectar flow slows...

    Re: Caught swarm

    If I "catch" a swarm
    1) I move them at night
    2) I set the swarm box where I want the new hive to sit and open up the entrance
    3) The following day they do their orientation flights
    4) A day...
  15. Re: How much honey to give your hive land sponsors

I've got 4 bee yards and only own 1 of them. The other 3 yard owners approached me and just wanted bee's on their property and want nothing in return. One of them actually insists on purchasing...

Re: Adding Supers, which is better

I top super as well. The bee's don't have to travel as far to unload. When I have multiple supers on I tend to move the ones closest to being capped down. My entrances are below the honey supers.

Re: green marked queen in my swarm trap

I've never had a 4 yr. old queen that still had paint on her thorax. I'd refer to notes in that case.

Re: Can Anyone Tell Me What is Happening?

I had a queen land on the outside of one of my hives. To me that looks like a swarm clustered around a queen as the bee's look like they're going across 2 hives. Mine stayed there for a week. ...

Re: green marked queen in my swarm trap

That's the only reason I'd consider marking a queen. Sometimes it's difficult to tell which hive they've come from, or if they're feral bee's. Marking kind of solves that issue.

    Re: Well that was fast.

You mentioned that you "dropped" in a queen from last year. If you dropped in a queen from a different hive immediately after creating the split, they probably killed her. You didn't say where the...
