  1. Re: Last year's comb with honey, sugar, fungus etc... What to do?

    Thanks a lot.
  2. Swarm traps. Only dry frames or some honey and pollen?

    Good day,

Two years ago I was able to trap a nice fat swarm with only a wooden box of about 20 litres without any frames or foundation. However, it was a real pain moving them to the hive...

  3. Last year's comb with honey, sugar, fungus etc... What to do?

    Hello,

I only had two hives wintering this year. And unfortunately, my bees didn't survive. Apparently, blinded by my last year's success of all of my 3 hives surviving, I did a sloppy...
  4. Re: Colony too big or not? Swarming in September? Bearding at night

Yes, the upper level with we frames is only accessible from inside the hive. Basically, it's like if I had a feeder on top.

As to your suggestion of giving them the frames back. The problem is...
  5. Re: Colony too big or not? Swarming in September? Bearding at night

    Thank you for responding.

The cloth shallow setup is as follows:
on top of the second full body I put a cloth (I use cloth instead of the inner cover) with it corner open - basically bees can...
  6. Colony too big or not? Swarming in September? Bearding at night

    Good day,

In mid-June this year I made a split from my overwintered colony. By the end of July I already had 3 full boxes (8 frame Lang) on that new split.

Two weeks ago I took the upper box...

    Re: Post-Swarm measures, splitting?

    Thank you for your recommendations.

I did put one of them on top of the main give. They didn't seem to mind at all.
The second one i didn't do anything to yet because I am still in doubt. Some...

    Re: Post-Swarm measures, splitting?

    Thank you for responding.

I have 1 emergency cell (upper middle section of the frame) and 2 swarming cells (bottom closer ot the side) on different frames. What we did is to put those 2 swarms...

    Post-Swarm measures, splitting?

    Good day!

Part of my hive has swarmed today. Not too many bees left though. One of my acquaintances a commercial beekeeper helped me to do the following:
    1. Go through the hive frame by frame...

  12. Plum blooming 24 feet from the hive. My bees aren't there...

    Good day!

My plum tree is 24' away from my hive. It's blooming for 2 days now.
I don't see any of my bees there. They're working as usually foraging, bringing in pollen and what not. But not a...
  13. Re: Spring inspection / maintenance shuffle, change, replace?

    Thanks for your answers.

The problem is that here near Montreal we're going a lot of rain and rather cold temperatures (in the 50s) for the next week at least or even longer. I tried going...

  15. Spring inspection / maintenance shuffle, change, replace?

    Good day,

3 out of my 3 hives have wintered alright they're working now. I've seen a lot of different instructions and videos regarding "spring inspection". People do all kinds of things...

    Re: ????Unanswered questions about bees????

Well, the proof is in the pudding. This is is the only explanation that makes sense. Isn't being logical and rational enough of an explanation? Especially in absence of a better (more rational) one.

    Re: ????Unanswered questions about bees????

    Here is an unanswered question.
How do bees decide to participate in a swarm or not. Be it a prime swarm or any other swarm. Read on swarming and you'll find out why they swarm, how, when etc. But...

    Re: ????Unanswered questions about bees????

A very experienced (and also very educated) beekeeper told me that smoke alerts bees of fire and they get full on honey in case they need to run for their lives. Thus they're not very concerned with...
  20. A late swarm and a weak colony. Part 2: Preparing for winter. Are they doomed?

    Hello!

Yesterday I moved a swarm from the trap to the new hive. Since this was a late swarm it had a lot of bee but very little comb, brood and almost no honey.

I also have a colony which...
  21. Re: A weak colony plus a late swarm. To merge or not to merge.

    Thank you for your advice.
What's not clear to me is how the bees will find their way home after the merge.
Say one of the families will stay where they're, but the "guest" one will have moved a...
  22. A weak colony plus a late swarm. To merge or not to merge.

    Good day!

I have a rather weak colony: 1 and full half bodies of 8 frames built and not building too much any more. I have also caught a roaming swarm in a trap. I was away so I don't know when...
  23. Re: Plastic top feeder. Lost, drowned bees, uneven consumption

In fact I got several ideas from this discussion. For instance, I live under white pines and my lot is covered with free pine straw. I didn't know it's being used as floater. I will try that .

  25. Plastic top feeder. Lost, drowned bees, uneven consumption

    Good day!

    I have 2 of these: http://www.gabees.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=34&products_id=263

Installed last Wednesday on 2 8 framers. Today I looked at both of them.

    One has almost...
