    Re: Laying worker?

If you’ve found eggs in pollen cells, most likely it’s a LW hive.

    Re: Helping small winter cluster

Don’t jeopardize your other hives to prop up one that might be a dead man walking. Keep the sugar on em and wait for decent flying/inspectable weather to see if they’ve made it.

    Re: Painting Supers

Ya, i second JW’s method. I use the zinsser stain block primer for the base coat and two coats of satin exterior paint too. Some of my boxes are ten years old and they’re starting to get to point of...
  5. Re: The interesting way this Russian man builds his bee boxes.

I would’ve liked to see a hive in use as I see no provision for frames. Top bar maybe?

    Re: Sierra Nevada

Welcome! It’s quite possible that you have colonies in the area they are very adaptive, see if you can find a beekeeper that will help you out putting up a swarm box.

Re: Too Cool Outside For a Cutout?

Capped brood is pretty tough and probably can survive being exposed to lower temps, open larvae and eggs not so much. I’d wait if I were you, mistakes happen when your in a hurry.

Re: Lesson learned the hard way

Ya, give them space and warmer weather and they will build in it! I’ve forgotten to take the shims off and gotten into some interesting situations too.

    Re: Asian Giant Hornet

Methinks it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination if a queen survived the trip overseas to the west coast on a ship, she could survive getting thru the Panama Canal to the SE coast.

    Re: Help needed with Bee's

Yup, I’m betting on them being mostly YJ’s too, I would suggest a exterminator or a beekeeper come and identify the actors and what is going on. If it is bees, maybe there’s a feral hive nearby that...

    Re: light hive fix?

Adding frames of brood would mean one would have to add bees to cover them also, my mentor always cautioned against that as it’s upsetting the balance of the donor hive when they’re building up in...
  15. Re: When to remove entrance reducer with variable temps

I wouldn’t worry about the temps, the bees’ll be above the entrance and be fairly out of the cold air. The main thing is, is the hive strong enough to defend it on full open. Maybe can you adjust it...

Sticky: Re: Going to use OTS

The artificial swarm in the spring won’t get the brood break, Mel always said to use them for honey production and count of them being a possible loss in the fall. I shied away from that because of...

Sticky: Re: Going to use OTS

This wil be my 8th season using OTS. Great for increases, honey production and as far as I’m concerned far simpler than grafting as long as you don’t want to mass produce queens. The only thing that...
