I might be a new beekeeper, not quite sure what I've trapped....

    Hi all,

Decided to set out a swarm trap in northwest Texas this spring, since I've built a couple small ponds in our backyard and many bees drink there this time of year.

I hadn't seen any activity around the trap. I was working in the tree last weekend and just decided to open the trap, not expecting to find anything. Yep, there were bees in it!

But there weren't many bees, 20 max, and there was just one section of comb on the frame, and a lobe coming off (because I left too much space next to the frame...). After several days of leaving it alone I've checked again - not much progress on the comb, and fewer than a dozen bees even at night.

What's going on here? Did the queen abandon this trap at some point, and a couple bees are hanging around still trying to make it work? Is there brood in the comb in the linked pic?

    Thanks!
