3/10/08 New Orleans area, turned a swarm around (scouts) from a home earlier today. 3/08/08 had 3 swarms in the same backyard, somebodys a beekeeper in the area...not me though. I lost my hives after the storm and I just started cleaning up the beeyard again. I think this year I will repopulate again.

The last week or so, the weather here in central Louisiana has bee in the low 80's during the day and mid-60 to 70 at night. Since Saturday, two of my swarm boxes have occupants. One hive is made up of nice bright yellow bees, possibly Italian, the other are small dark bees that I think are feral bees from about 60 acres of old hardwood trees. I am using 8 frame deeps with old brood comb.

1st swarm of 2009 http://picasaweb.google.com/pyxicephalus/February272009?authkey=Gv1sRgCNiImN7ggOzAvgE#

Was not my own, but from a feral colony, most likely as it was in the city.

First one caught this year was February 27, 2009. Have caught about 17 since then, none from my own hives, well one that tried to leave that was a freshly housed swarm, storm came in after they had balled in my sweetgum tree 35' up.

Rain storm settled in and they did their best to fly back to the hive I had them in. They wound up 3' from the hive body on my driveway all spread out.

After they dried off they re entered the hive and have been there since.

This is the Feb 27 one http://picasaweb.google.com/pyxicephalus/February272009?authkey=Gv1sRgCNiImN7ggOzAvgE#53076 14049385754946

This is the last one I caught on April 15, 2009 http://picasaweb.google.com/pyxicephalus/April152009#5325127908239232818

It looked just like this I promise!

The season has started in southern Louisiana. I walked out in the yard yesterday 03-23-10 and found a swarm about three an one half pounds on a small citrus tree that I had planted last year. They were only about 18 inches off the grownd. The weather was cool, windy, and overcast. It is my first one for this year. I do not believe that it from my hives, as the bees are dark with deep black stripes. They were very tame and I had them hived in about two minutes. I wish they all could be this easy.

Hived a small swarm this morning into one of my nucs. It was about the size of 2 medium oranges, or a double handful. They were about 4 feet off the ground on a small limb of one of my holly trees. Clipped the branch with my hand snips, shook them gently into the box, and looks like they are happy in their new home.

Today is July 9, 2011

3/2/2013. After dark got a call from home owner in SW Louisiana - Football size swarm in front of home - middle of town. Located on a small bush & front of home. About 1 foot off the ground. Smaller swarm in back yard on small tree - 3 ft off ground. Next day swamp combined and we captured.

Had left a hive in front of this house - next weekend (3/8/13) - small swarm showed up in the hive. Move to a nuc after moving to our bee yard.

3/16/13 - Lake Charles, LA. Soccer ball size swarm in a fig tree about 2 feet of the ground. Brushed into a hive.

3/19/13...Another call from LC. Will see about it today.
Busy in South West Louisiana.

I have two swarms to report. I thought I posted the first one last week. Oh well.

First swarm was from a water heater tank which contained a hive of bees. I moved the hive a few miles and the second day the tank was on the ground I drove up to the tank about 4:20 PM on July 24. I followed the swarm to a red oak treee about 100 yards from the tank where it stayed intil the following Tuesday and about 11:30 AM it swarmed and took up residence in a lure box I set up on the previous Wednesday. I documented the week with my camcorder and will post the series on youtube ASAP.

Location for both swarms is Springhill LA.

Well, well, now one of my own hives swarmed 10:38am 6/14/14, clear sunshine day 87 degrees approx.

They are in a tree approx 40' high, I placed a large Top Bar Swarm Trap almost directly under where they are in the tree in hopes of luring them back to the hotel atmosphere they left from lol

OK now what to do with the hive they left from?

Being new and not knowing what do to is disheartening:{

Thanks for any feedback!

What is needed:

zip code, city or county
date when the bees swarmed or when you found the swarm.
comments - example: if the swarm came from your hive, or if you were called to pick up a swarm, how long was it there. This is not for cutouts unless the bees just took up residence and are not established. It would also be great to include a small photo of the swarm.

This forum is not for general discussion.
