mid-Atlantic Virginia appears to be having weeping willows coming out. On a drive across the state yesterday I witnessed many willow trees in near bloom conditions.

I also saw my bees bringing in pollen but this may have been cedar trees (the temp on Wednesday was 70 with snow still on the ground).

Yesterday, 17 Feb, was the first 65F day since fall. I noticed a few bees bringing in large loads of very pale yellow pollen and dancing it out on the combs when I put on patties. Today, about 4 out of 5 bees coming in were carrying the same stuff.

Probably maple, which I heard is the first thing to bloom around here.

I'll check the patties in a week to see if they're even eating it...

Basswood. 20176, 6/17/14

I have lived in this house for seven years and this is the first time this tree has ever bloomed - I didn't even know what it was and never paid it any attention. When I walked out this morning it was absolutely covered from top to bottom with honey bees and bumble bees. I looked it up and discovered it is a Basswood, also known as a "Bee-Tree". Perhaps it was our extended cold winter that kicked it into gear.

Strange, my apricots are not close, but the red maple was in full bloom by valentines. He’s been the same week for the last 3 years. The maple for the last 10 years has been more reliable. The fruit trees seem to vary more year to year.

These apricots are supposedly Manchurian Apricots and flower every year around when the red maples start to flower. The plums I have started to flower on the 7th of March last year, Bradford pears on the 18th and peaches on the 29th. Apples which indicate the beginning of swarm season for me started to bloom in Mid April. So this year the maples and the apricot are behind last year but we will see if the rest try to catch up.

JW,

Since I'm old, and can't see the blooms, I've trained the squirrels at my place to throw the first couple blooms down from the tree tops. They are much easier to see that way.
