I am at Zipcode 75025, just North of Dallas.
Henbit is blooming, but I haven't seen any bees on it.

Forsythia is just starting to bloom, although the freezes last weekend have stopped any new blooms opening.

My little Johnny Jump Ups are blooming. Haven't seen bees on them, either.

Everything else is still dormant or just at the swelling stage, but my bees are getting nectar from somewhere! smile.gif They are also packing in pollen.

the redbud first bloomed feb 24, also the first signs of fruit trees (peach and pear) the same day. with the first sign of sunlight the wild onion are beginning to bloom profusely the same day.

wild mustard began blooming earlier in the week (about) feb 20. the bees were working butter cups (small 4 petal yellow flower with waxy petal) and wild mustard feb 24.

the yellow pollen is now a bit lighter and I assume it is from the mustard and butter cups. they are also bringing in a not quite red pollen who's origin is unknown to me.

the cedar (ash juniper) tips are now dripping rusty brown. does anyone know if this cedar (distinct from eastern red cedar) is of any benefit to the bees?

Blooming Koelreuteria paniculata (Golden Rain Tree)

September 18, 2007

zip - 78114 (rural address 30 miles southeast of San Antonio)

This past week, our ladies have really been working the bloom on this invasive tree of Asian origin.

In the past, I have not been fond of this tree. The blooms are beautiful but the birds soon have the seeds sprouting all over the yard. However, with most of the plants in our area in bloom from spring to early summer, this tree offers the bees a nice boost at the end of our summer when pollen and nectar are scarce.

75233, in Oak Cliff, south Dallas, Texas, we've got dandelions blooming. I was surprised to see so much bloom despite having some really cold weather. I haven't got my own bees yet (they arrive in April) but I have been noticing small numbers of bees out on the dandelions in the afternoons.

any comment Bees are loaded with yellow pollen (3 out of 4 bees avg.), and every now and then one comes in with a load of gray pollen. I have been watching the Elms and dandelions and today is the first day they were really blooming consistantly. Early Junipers have already bloomed and are making berries, some are late and just getting started, don't know why they look the same to me. Not sure about the real name for the willow bush. These bushes grow in wet areas and along the edges of ponds, evergreen, 4-7 ft. tall, medium to narrow green leaves (about an inch wide at the base, 3-4 inches long tapering to a point), small little buds about 1/8th of an inch, maybe smaller.

Dandelion- have scattered blooms throughout the yard. First noticed today.

Moss Verbena or Verbena tenuisecta (Verbenaceae). I look at these tiny violet/purple flowers every day during this time. Today was the first of the actual blooms. These flowers are part of a Texas Wildflower seed mix

I have over-seeded my yard with Texas Wildflowers. The Verbena is always the first to emerge and bloom.
It looks like most of the mix has now begun to emerge, but so far these are the only blooms.

My peach tree has significant beginnings of buds, as does the apricot tree. The plum tree looks like it is getting bumps, but that's it.

Stay tuned...

Honey Mesquite blooming very well now. Noticed the first blooms on one tree about a week ago, now multiples are.

Just to note: Weather's been WEIRD this year. MUCH hotter and drier than normal. Since April it's rained a good rain about once a month, sporadically over the area, when usual is weekly or more with everyone getting drenched. Temps usually in 80s and 90s in May and June have been high 90s and even 100 (today's temp = 100, heat index = 104).
