Sourwood in full bloom here in Western NC. It would help alot if it would QUIT RAINING!!!!!

So, that would be 7-12-05, 28909.

The best part is that when I parked the hive, I did it right underneath a Sourwood tree and didn't even know it...until yesterday, :D :D

I did a tour of the area around me yesterday and finally found what I was looking for: the sourwood trees are getting ready to open up their blooms. I was afraid the Easter freeze had killed the buds, the way it did for the tulip poplars. I think it has a little but only to a very limited extent.

Estimated first sourwood bloom date for southern NC mountains -- June 25-30

This is the first year I have seen honey bees on the Red Bay - it sure is a sweet smelling flower - it reminds me of citrus blooms - whether or not they make any surplus honey from it I don't know. The flow isn't completely over here but it is winding down - the small gallberry ( inkberry ) is still blooming hard. I have already pulled some honey from my hives and will pull the remainder for the year most likely in about 3 weeks. Had a wonderful flow this year. How did your bees make out up there ?

challenger
05-22-2016, 06:06 AM
I came out of winter with low numbers so I didn't have enough bees for surplus honey. I've trapped or retrieved several swarms and am up to 22 hives but they won't give me honey either. I've got supers on but I'll be lucky to get 100 pounds.

In the north central part of North Carolina on the Virginia state line. Smartweed in full bloom, golden rod here and there, seen bees working morning glorys, and oddly enough bees are working pigweed. Not sure if their getting pollen or nectar or both from the pigweed but sure is nice to see that plant serve a purpose for me for a change. Hard to keep it out of the pastures and choking out the grass.

Forgot to add that I do not feed at all and all hives are full of honey to the point of backfilling the broodnest.

I don't understand this last post? Are the hives full of honey because of the fall flowers/nectar or are they full going into fall as a matter of your management practices?
For sure there is no flow in SE coastal NC. I leave my shop door open for a little while and the bees are piling in like robbing maniacs.

Challengers were nice cars back in the day. I have had some wild rides with a 440 under the hood. Sorry to hear you are not having a flow in SE coastal N.C. I am in the north central part of N.C. right on the Virginia line and we have a monster nectar flow on. Smart weed galore. Golden rod on hand as well. I have seen the girls working morning glories and even the dreaded pigweed. As far as management I do not take any honey from my hives other than what is in the honey supers. Hope things get better for you.

Bees hitting maple, dandelion, and cherry trees (full bloom now) in Charlotte area. I had to add a super already? Others similar? Is this similar to previous years or does it seem to be starting early?

Bees are happy with the warm spell without rain in Pitt County. Both nectar and pollen coming in really strong. we need a couple of weeks without the rain and some 70 degree days. If your bees came thru winter with good numbers and a low mite load we might see a good crop this year. We don't need any hurricanes. Good luck and enjoy your bees. 2 swarms caught so far and I'll have at least 1 nuc going into winter to give me a spare queen.

Camellia has been in bloom for a week.

Spicebush, Crabapple, and red maple just started.

We have had a nice 70-80 degree F warm spell for the last few days, but this weekend it will be back in the 40's (with nights in the high 20's -mid 30's) with rain forecast for the early part of next week. I hope it doesn't wash out all the blooms.

Also Prunus mume - Japanese Flowering apricot. This is what I saw and mistook for Crabapple. A Botanist friend corrected me, but I cannot do 'strikethrough' in the crabapple of my previous post.

Piedmont North Carolina (Wake County, Granville County, Franklin County.).

Sourwood first bloom observed in late May the couple years I have been watching carefully, though most bloom during June. The latest I have seen them blooming here this year 2019 is early July (saplings on a roadside). We missed our June nectar flow this year (2019), even though I have seen the sourwoods bloom just as usual. I heard about sourwood skipping a year every now and then in the mountains, now I have actually witnessed it. The honey we get in the whole month of June is water white/crystal clear to light amber in colour. People do not know about sourwood being in the piedmont, but are actually a very common tree here, getting rarer near the coast of North Carolina from what I read in Vascular Flora of the Carolinas.
