Still in the low to mid 30s during the day with off and on snow flurries predicted for all week. . Only had about 5 days the whole winter where the girls could get out and fly... Last year at this time it was warm for a couple of weeks but then had a reall bad cold snap towards the middle/end of April which reaked havoc on the apple trees and the bees.

Forgot to mention the 6 acres of cultivated blueberries I had 4 hives working. Bloom was at peak Tuesday evening during my visit to check on things, and then this happens just 24 hours later. http://youtu.be/RLQd5jR0xtg So sorry for my friend, and the loss of his season! Not sure how the girls faired; assuming they're a little shook up, but OK.

Yup, nice for now but could very well change on a dime! and probably will. The ocean temps are in the middle 30's so any wind off
the water is worse than sitting in front of a air conditioner. We actually look forward to a NW wind in the spring as it brings warmer

Try this link http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=a917

It is also called American linden, basswood and lime tree. The small leaf linden doesn't produce nectar like the big leaf linden does. It's
a beautiful tree and smells terrific when blooming. It usually blooms here around the 3rd. week of June but looks like it will bloom earlier this year. The bloom lasts for about 2 weeks, depends on weather, and the tree is covered with blooms and bees. You can stand under the tree in bloom and hear the buzz of the bees up in the flowers.
The honey is light in color with a bit of a tang. It has a fine aroma and is very good tasting, most people love it.
The nectar flow is cyclical with a big flow year followed by 2 or 3 years of lesser flow. The big flow year provides for a big nectar harvest by the bees and a very good honey harvest after it's dried down.
This, or next year, is set to be the big flow year if the weather cooperates.

We are dry here. No rain to speak of near any of my yards for better than 3 weeks. The vineyards love this weather just before grape harvest, warm and dry. It increases the sugar content of the grapes, and no splitting of the skin from rain. I don't like it one bit.

Grod is done here and so is groundsel bush. Asters just blooming and covered with bees, some knapweed blooming and chicory too.
Knotweed leaves are turning yellow and brown, no blooms even in the shade. I don't think enough of a bloom is left for the hives to gain any weight on.

Noticed the bats are gone and the hummingbirds. The grackles are flocking up and the Robins from up north have moved down here. Hawks came down too and the Ospreys left 2 weeks ago. Some trees near ponds and lakes are starting to show some red on the leaves. All early for us.

March 1st, 12123, 51 degrees. One of my hives is bringing in yellow pollen and some of the bees are bringing in a dark orange pollen. I am guessing crocus. I guess my 3 other survivor hives did not find the crocus patch yet, if crocus is what they are bringing in.

Accidentally asked about the Locust bloom in the "swarm dates" thread yesterday. Does anyone have a sense of the timing on the locust? I haven't seen any in the Hudson Valley yet and can't tell if I'm looking to early or if it's a bust of year like the lilacs were. It's my favorite honey and I'm trying to prepare! Went and looked at a few trees today and saw no signs of flowers.

Chestnut blooming
Buttercups blooming
Some white clover
Peonies beginning
Wild Daisies blooming

No sign of it here in Niagara Co., I'd guess at least another week. Went through Silver Creek today and saw a few trees just barely starting. I went through Cleveland, OH memorial weekend and there was nothing and there usually is at that time. It will come, be ready!

Sickdog - I think those are more of a chokecherry? The Locust looks like this... https://naturewalk.yale.edu/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/black-locust-flowers-2.jpg?itok=IpRxCaPw

Locust in full bloom here. Very sparse on most trees compared to last year. Very few bees in then so far. Many trees look very poor or dying. 14131

Basswood opening this morning 14131. The tree in my yard is loaded with blossoms compared to none last year.
This afternoon, after morning showers, the tree is full of bees. Life is good!:)

Is Basswood a good nectar/pollen producer? There is a huge one about 400 yards from my hives. The only one around. Not sure if my bees work it or not. Would love to plant a couple around my house. When do they turn to seed?
