Okay, 5 Aug 05, Beebe AR 72012, second bloom Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans). There had been no color that I noticed all summer until then and this was extremely faint. I rode by it the day before and there was no color. Flower pods but no blooms. There are older and a couple last year bean pods so there had to have been a first bloom. Sorry I took so long. I just wanted to be accurate. Thanks Jim!! David

I'm behind and knew I would be so I wrote down the info I observed. Arkansas Lower White County.
Tulip tree 24 February
Crab Apple Tree 6 March
Hensbane 6 March started my backyard,
massive bloom 6 April and
bees are working them
hard.
A vine with bright red flowers and some white five petal flowers with a faint red vein in each petal. 10 March
Blackberry 4 April

I missed a lot ... ie maple, dandelion, there's a bunch of plants I don't have a clue as to what they are but the bees really like them.

Mystery solved. Walked the creek and some of the witch hazel in full sun is blooming and honey bees and wild pollinators are working it. The ones in shade are just now putting buds out. That can end badly with a sudden cold snap.

clyderoad

Well I better correct my statement from this morning. After visiting some of my yards today (62*F) and finding some pollen coming in.
Looks like the grey alders have stated blooming (see picture), also some light yellow pollen in 2 yards (no pics) from either witch hazel or maple or both. I couldn't track it down because of snow in the woods and mud in the fields. If alders are blooming, real maple bloom can't be far behind and certainly only 10 days of so out.

I don't know what mine are foraging on and i don't much care ... all I know is my hives are blowin' up and I hope those frames I ordered from Dadant get here before they reach critical mass . Well , it isn't really that bad , but I did add a medium super - and in one case , a new split , I added a deep - to all hives last week , and will be monitoring for the need for more . I have split all 3 hives that survived the winter and all are doing well so far . I'll be checking for queen cells in the new (Mother's Day , 5/13) splits tomorrow or Friday (got a Dr appt at the VA Thursday) and will make a couple or four nucs if things are right . I wasn't expecting getting any honey this year since I'm expanding the apiary , but this may be that year that I get it all with a cherry on top . The icing on this cake is that my garden is blowin' up too . When it rains ...

AHudd
05-22-2018, 06:14 PM
I was really worried when that late hard freeze came about the time the Redbuds were peaking, but it has come back strong.

I put a fourth medium on one hive today and most have three. They probably won't fill the last ones, but I didn't want them to think they were running out of room. It may not seem like much to some, but around here I think it is. It is for me anyway.

Good luck for the next couple of weeks.
