Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 9,300,
October 5, 1852,; Reissued May 26, 1863, No. 1,484.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, Lorenzo L. Langstroth, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Beehives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

For the Langstroth birthday celebration in Philly a few years ago, we got a chance to see many of the Langstroth and beekeeping related documents held by The American Philosophical Soceity. In the lobby, they had the (actual) Lewis and Clark journals on display.

The Langstroth patent is interesting. He had really bad handwriting, but when I saw the pate to saw BEAUTIFUL penmanship. It was explained by a historian that was with us that he had his wife write it out.
