05-Bee Condo with Wood Follower Board

In the fall, I remove the #5 and #16 frame and install a solid wood follower board in their place. I then place a second deep hive body on top for the bees to put up stores for winter as you would with a conventional hive. This keeps the bees from clustering into an end without the ability to move up which result in dead bees from starvation. I haven’t tried over-wintering with just the bottom 20 frames but I would think the bees would do fine in a warmer climate.
