The next three pictures show the standard deep Langstroth box I use to start the hive. I fill it with either frames or top bars with just starter strips. You can peek in and see how the cluster looks, how they are building comb etc. Very useful. I cut a piece of 1 by to put in the window and made some toggles to hold it in place. This is very useful for shakedowns for regressing because you can see if they are absconding or staying and how they are doing. The frame around the outside of the observation window and the handles on all the boxes are from the strip you cut off of a 1 x 12 to make it 9-5/8″. Note the back picture has a board that keeps the back from becoming an entrance.
