HONEY BOARD ANNOUNCES WINNING RECIPES

"Holiday Honey Punch," submitted by the Cook DuPage Beekeepers Association, Oak Park, Ill., was selected as the grand prize winning recipe in the National Honey Board's Beekeepers' Favorite Recipe Contest.

"This punch has been served at the Cook DuPage Beekeepers Association annual holiday party for almost 40 years," said Ron Fischer, president of the association. "This is a great drink for your holiday guests or at any party."

In addition to the grand prize winning recipe, the National Honey Board selected winning recipes in five categories. "Easy Honey Chicken Wings," submitted by North Central Beekeepers Association, Inc., Brainerd, Minn., won for the appetizer category. "Coconut Custard," submitted by Lorain County Beekeepers Association, Grafton, Ohio won for the baked goods/desserts category. "Honey Barbecued Pork," submitted by the Lancaster County Honey Producers, won for main dishes. "Honey Pineapple Carrot Salad," submitted by Chippewa ­ Eau Claire County Beekeepers, Chippewa Falls, Wisc., won for the salad/side dish category and "Honey Mango Chutney," submitted by the Anderson County Beekeepers Association, Kingston, Tenn., won for the best recipe in the miscellaneous category.

"Nobody knows cooking with honey better than beekeepers and their families," said Annette Laber, fulfillment coordinator for the National Honey Board. "We invited local, state and national beekeeping associations to submit recipes to the contest to find the best of the best."

All associations that submitted a recipe to the contest received a honey promotion kit (apron, cookbook and recipe brochures).

The grand prize winner, the Cook DuPage Beekeepers Association, received a gift certificate for $300 in National Honey Board merchandise. The five associations that submitted the winning recipes for each category received a gift certificate for $150 in National Honey Board merchandise.

The winning recipes will be featured in upcoming publicity.

HOLIDAY HONEY PUNCH

Makes 20 servings.
(recipe from the Cook DuPage Beekeepers Association)

3/4 cup honey
2 cups boiling water
4 cups cranberry juice cocktail
2 cups orange juice
1 cup lemon juice
1 quart ginger ale

Dissolve honey in boiling water and chill. Combine with cranberry, orange and lemon juice and chill. Before serving, add ginger ale.
