Instead of getting packages, you should look around for the nearest beekeepers to you and get to know them. See if you can get a few splits and queens from them.

If you have some deeps now and can only get deep nucs then go ahead and get the nucs. put them into deep boxes on the bottom and put mediums on top the bees will move up. a few years ago when I switched to all mediums thats pretty much all I did. If you ask, some nuc producers will make you a medium nuc. I do.

I've never heard of nuc providers making med. available, even upon special request. Good to know though.

Are they willing to do it even if you are only ordering 2 nucs? I feel that would probably be the kinda thing they are willing to make available to large suppliers.

I belong to the Colonial Beekeepers here in Virginia. We have a very good and active Nuc and Queen rearing programs to provide nucs and queens locally. Many of our members use all mediums including myself. I'll make a deep nuc if I have to but there are other members who can provide them so I mostly stick to mediums. Within the club we make nucs to order but we also provide nucs to others.

Specialkayme - Drop me a message and I'll send you my email. Your just down the road a bit, but I'd have to ask the state about crossing the line. All of our nucs get an inspection by the state prior to sale.

Joy2005 - I wish I could help but I don't think my bees could handle your winter.
