I have two nucs {3 deeps} that where swarms that i took in SEPT. they are doing well but i fear they may be running out of honey there lite but have alittle weight to them it's been cold and i don't want to open the hives and i had added some sugar about two week ago. my question is can i make a sugar pattie to slip under the top cover on to the frames when things are cold this i could do real fast and the nuc will not lose heat.I have 1in. high to work with and a length of a nuc to work with i have top entrance and bottom. than you.
recipes please.
I saw a few girls coming out of one of my hives today during the afternoon sun. I took the time to slide a Dadant winter patty into my two hives and my nuc. Glad I did, my nuc looked like it really needed it. I used to make my own candy patties, but not since Dadant came out with their winter patties. My bees love them, and they are so simple to use. No more time spent at the stove with a candy thermometer making a mess.
I look in on my nucs when the temps are in the 40's with no problems. You can make up some feeding rims that are 3/4" or bigger if you like, then you can add some dry sugar, sugar candy, fondant or what ever you like. You could add frames of honey from dead outs close to the cluster with out disturbing the cluster to much.
Thats what i have now thats how i made my top entrance and i have dry sugar on now so i quess i'll keep doing that till i can put a frame or two of honey by the cluster. thanks .
I would just go to your local craft shop and pick up a box of fondant this late in the game. It's already rolled into the sheets for you. As long as your nucs are out of any direct wind, you shouldn't have a problem with a quickie under the lid over 40 degrees. I haven't had a problem with low stores since I left them with so much in the Fall, but next year I don't think I'm going to bother making my own patties. I think one thing that seemed to really work for me was the Honey-B-Healthy that I added to my last 2 feedings.
I hear Walmart carries fondant. I always get mine from a distributor but have to buy in 50 lb blocks, price is around $50.00
