Talking Hi from a total novice

Hi I'm Angie, I have never kept bees, but have always been interested in them, and my BIL is a commercial beekeeper in NZ, and when I was visiting last month I donned up a beesuit, and went out with him for the first time, and am totally hooked

So I'm currently reading all I can on the subject, and hope to be picking your brains, and getting to the stage of actually getting a hive.

I'm going to have to just soak up knowledge for a while, as I won't get a hive until I move back to NZ from Australia, which might be a year, but all good, at least I won't (hopefully) be jumping in the deep end too fast...

A quick question too, my father, who lives with me, is allergic, he gets full on anaphylactic shock if stung, he's not phased by the idea of a beehive, but how far away from a dwelling would it be safe to site a hive for my father? We are on 1/2 an acre now, but hope to move to somewhere larger in NZ.

Thanks
