Endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, the small hive beetle,Aethina tumida was first discovered in the United States in 1996 and has now spread to many U.S. states including ....
Is that map of distribution on Wiki Accurate? Looks like mostly northern states. Since they're from Africa, you wouldn't expect that. I'm in MO. Have they been found here?
I don't know what you wrote here. Are you asking "is the line of bees that have been living with the beetles for thousands of years[...]the breed that I want."?
If that's what you are asking, then no, you don't want the bees that have been living w/ SHB. And you can't get them in the US anyway.
They fly, I have watched them come in during the late afternoon. They land on the bees landing board and rush in very quickly. Sometimes the bees chase them right out, sometimes they do not.
They are a lot of fun to kill. My bees attack them like a dog would when it is trying to kill a cat. When the beetle gets free I smash it with my hive tool. It is a great way to get your bees to think you are super cool.
