Hire a kid pay them cents per frame. Your kid, neighbors kid, grand kid, slave etc.

Bobby pins rust. I found that out this spring when I opened my hives.

My wife and I have chosen not to have kids. I'm starting to rethink that decision. I never considered the cheap labor force aspect of having kids.

I'm only starting my second year too, but I guess our climate is about a month ahead of yours, so I've already been in through my hives a couple of times. I ordered 100 of the plastic pins that Mann Lake has. I will be using them. I think they were $9.something per 100. They are probably not as cheap as bobby pins. I got my wife to pick up the bobby pins last year so I don't know how much they cost. I only put 4 on a deep frame. Two on each side.

I will probably swap over to using bamboo skewers that I read about on here.

Another option would be to simply wire them!

Last year was my first year, and admittedly, wiring frames was my least favorite part of the process. However, now that I've settled into my routine of how to do it and getting it done...It really hasn't been bad!

I use bobby pins from Dollar Store. 99 cents for 100 pins. I have never had one to rust. Some are more than 10 years old.

I only use 2 per frame. One each on each side. All you need is to hold it straight until they draw it out.

If you are experiencing rust, why not just remove the pins after they draw out the comb.

Thimble or light mallet for installation? Never tried using Bobby pins but I would be tempted to try these methods for pushing them through the holes.

Bobby pins work for brood frames if your not going to ever extract from the deeps. I wire mine with the two middle holes only, some beeks use the top and bottom holes on each side bars to make an X for support, either way you can extract honey from them if you use wire.

ok, thanks for the tips and suggestions all. I think I will stick to bobby pins and just use less of them. I was utilizing all 8 holes and that just got to be a real pain. I'll try using 4 per frame from now on. thanks again folks!

Wire and brass inserts. More work, but you end up with flat comb instead of bulged all over, easier on the bees and the bee-keeper.

Sometimes there is a reason for doing it the oldfashioned way.
