I had the same question in the swarms forum so interested too... I just used Q-tip too and after 3 weeks plus rain the traffics to traps has stopped so I re-applied yesterday only to the opening...
I am by no means a expert, but what I do is every week or so I check the 2 traps at my house. All I do is smell the q-tip. If I still smell LMO then I just leave it alone. Most times after 3-4 weeks I dip it in the LMO again and return to the trap. Then I go do the same in the 3 other traps that are not at my house. I can not say if that is the best way, just the way I do it. I just lay the q-tip across the top frame bars, no plastic bag. It should start getting fun soon, swarm season is getting closer.
