Ok, so I bought the Walter Kelley Foundationless frames with the wooden comb guide at the top. Am I correct in assuming that with level hives I only have to correct crooked comb that the bees draw out? No wax or popsicle sticks, correct?
Paint the boxes a light color and don't let them get too hot.
I've had foundationless frames on the outside positions collapse from the weight of the honey.
These are deep frames that had no reinforcing cross wires.
Make sure to keep the frames pressed against each other. Do not leave spaces between the frames, as that will encourage cross comb. You may still have some squirrelly comb during the year, so you may need to occasionally correct some cross comb during the year.
I started foundationless last year, and really enjoyed seeing the girls' handywork.
And remember to pay attention to the orientation of the comb if you cut anything out and have to lay it down for any reason. Comb does have an up and a down, and if you stick it back in upside down or sideways, thats not a good thing.
