Not sure how it is on the east cost, but seems a little cold for splits! =)
I have a friend in Ontario how has been pretty impressed with Olivarez they have both hygienic italians and carniolans.

This is a research thread to see where in California is a good quality place/breeder with good genetics. I won't be splitting for a while , still cold and snowy here in NS

I've never had bad queens from any Cali breeder so far. Good queens from Jackie Park Burris. Also very good Cordovan's from Velasquez apiaries. http://vapiaries.com/

There is a chance that you will have a hard time getting queens out of Cali this year... With the drought conditions there are likely going to be queen shortages and the ones that do get reared will be reared on syrup and pollen sub. IMO not worth the money.

Also you are going to be restricted to breeders who ship out of Country; currently I don't believe any of them do. It may take a year or so for them to get familiar with the process and get hooked up with brokers.

Will there be any extra effort on the border crossing bees regarding small hive beetle compared to shipments inside the US?

A queen cage isn't a very good location for a shb to hide. Super low risk and they will not survive the NS climate. They don't even last here in CT.

SHB could definitely survive in NS climate. It's been sighted in many provinces, and seems at least endemic to southern Ontario. If we don't take them seriously, they'll adapt. It may not be in NS yet, but that doesn't mean it could not become a threat there.

Also, the last report about renewing or not the package importation ban mentioned that some neglectful American breeders sent queen cages with pests in them, which I believe were SHB among other things.

I would not get too worked up about them. I move hundreds of packages a year up from GA and some usually have SHB in them with the cluster. I have yet to see them in a second year colony and the only reports I have heard of them continuously in northern hives have been in the hives of migratory.

Whether it is the cold weather or the loam soil not being all that suitable for them to pupate in; they don't survive long in the north.

The attendants will have to be killed upon receiving them and then introduced , as per instructions from our bee health department . I guess it would take care of any " issues " that they may be carrying .

Strachans has Italian and New world carniolan. Good bees. Ben how is your commercial beekeeper plans coming along? I wish you well. When I was trying to do it many many moons ago there were no bee websites and the bee magazines were just a dartboard where you guessed who was a reliable seller. I usually chose the shyster because he had a more seductive add.
