    Default Hello from Newberry, FL

    Hello, All!

A couple of years ago, Amazon.com recommended the book "Lessons from an Accidental Beekeeper" which struck me as odd because I was re-reading the Laurie King mystery "The Beekeeper's Apprentice", which does mention bees, but is really about Sherlock Holmes! On a whim, I downloaded the sample, enjoyed the writer's style, bought the book, and to my utter astonishment, found myself reading about beekeeping the last 2 years. I started with Kim Flottum, moved to a few others, and found myself dismayed by the assumptions regarding pesticides. Although Dadant is just a 20 minute drive away, I knew I wouldn't use the chemicals required, and probably couldn't lift the boxes, either. Before giving up, Amazon came to my rescue with "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Beekeeping" which is where I learned about no-and-low pesticide beekeeping, small cell size, and a variety of hive types I'd not noticed before. An internet search later, and I spent every night for weeks reading Michael Bush's website, bought his book, too -- and decided that top bar (horizontal) hives were something I could do. I'll be building the hives using Phil Chandler's plan, including the deep hive floor, and am re-reading the various takes on TBH management. My first package is due to arrive the week of April 7, 2014, so I don't know if I even qualify as a "newbee" yet!

Thank you! I've been in touch with both groups, and will begin attending the gainesville area bee club meetings soon.
