My hives have a top "hole" that is permanent, approximately 3/8" high across the width of the hive. I did build a bottom entrance into my bottom boards, but under normal circumstances that bottom entrance is blocked.
I screwed 4 little screws into the 4 corners of the inside of the telescoping cover so that the telescoping cover sits on the heads of those four screws whose heads rest on the inner cover. That gives slightly less than a 1/8" gap all around the edge of the telescoping cover. I don't know yet how well that will work but I had a small mold problem last year and this should give lots more ventilation. I hope. Let me know if this is a bad idea. Our winters are very mild anyway.
Here in Denver, I am mostly using a 3/8"T x 1/2"W bottom entrance with a 3/8"T x 3/4"W top entrance. Some have a 3/8"T x 2"W top entrance (in addition to the previously stated bottom entrance). This is my first year with this arrangement, but an inspection today showed no condensation on the bottoms of the inner cover or telescoping lid.
