In the wee hours yesterday, a bear attacked my hive. I managed to save about 3/4 each of 11 combs and put all the live bees I could find back in the hive. Last night, that blasted bear came back. Unfortunately, we were also dealing with a tree that fell on our house and power outage, so I gave the bees up for lost until I saw a bunch of them huddled up in the hive and on some combs that were on the ground. No idea if the queen was in there, but I couldn't just let them die without a fighting chance, so I scooped them into a nuc box and salvaged a couple of combs, and put the box into the garage. So here are my questions:
1) I don't really have any hopes for these bees, but how long will it take to know for sure if the queen is dead?
2) The nuc box holds 12 combs, and I only salvaged a couple (they're not even very nice). Is there anything I can do to increase their chances of survival?
3) I live in the suburbs and have lots of kids around. Is there a good strategy for dealing with bears other than putting up an electric fence?
