I've seen this before and it's a queen trap. It traps the queen when a swarm tries to leave a hive. The workers go through the screen that looks like a queen excluder and the queen is forced up into the other portion and can't get out.
Thanks Rader, I wonder what became of the style trap in the picture that fordtractornut posted. I read about drone traps but I hadn't seen them aside from the queen excluder ones. This one from the post I like because the queen goes up into that other level, that is a clever design. The ones from Italy is actually pretty cool. I guess it has a hole for the queen to fit through that faces the exit of the hive.
Queen and Drone trap, good for keeping swarming down.. WONT keep a virgin queen in though.
Need find, don't see them around to much like this.
