I've seen this before and it's a queen trap. It traps the queen when a swarm tries to leave a hive. The workers go through the screen that looks like a queen excluder and the queen is forced up into the other portion and can't get out.

Queen AND drone trap. Also used to restrict drone flight from during queen rearing...prevents unwanted drones from flying.

Also used to trap drones from drone mother colonies for sperm collecting, for doing instrumental insemination.

We use them to control swarming when we are not able to be in all the bee yards ,we use a slightly different version.a fairly effective tool.

Do you have to make these or does a bee supplier sell them? I haven't seen these in catalogs I don't think.

Thanks Rader, I wonder what became of the style trap in the picture that fordtractornut posted. I read about drone traps but I hadn't seen them aside from the queen excluder ones. This one from the post I like because the queen goes up into that other level, that is a clever design. The ones from Italy is actually pretty cool. I guess it has a hole for the queen to fit through that faces the exit of the hive.

The one I saw was bought from Sears Roebuck about 50 years ago. I've never seen them listed for sale anywhere.

Queen and Drone trap, good for keeping swarming down.. WONT keep a virgin queen in though.
Need find, don't see them around to much like this.
We build\manufacture one but don't sell to many.
