    Default American Beekeeper Population

Anybody want to spitball the number of beekeepers in the country? I'm talking urban, rural, suburban, even workers who don't own the bees themselves. Try an estimate at the percent of America's population (317,000,000)!

That's a higher percent than I was anticipating.

beekeeping seems to be having a revival.. not sure if its from the media attention bees have been getting or the trend to go granola.. Preppers maybe? I do have to say that I think its a good thing.

I would have thought it would be higher , since I've gotten into beekeeping I keep finding out about other beeks within a few miles that have bees .
But I also realize we are a very small percentage . How about 1 % .

Beekeeping revivals seem to come around every 20 years or so. Following food trends.

How many beekeepers are there? That would be a pure guess. 1%? 317,000?

1% would be 3.1 million beekeepers.

The number of beekeepers could go up or down and not mean a spit. The number of colonies would make a difference.

But that was not the question, so what does it matter? Maybe he wants to sell insurance.

    I'd say 0.1 to 0.05%.

It's most likely closer to 0.05% in terms of current people keeping bees since many hobbyists will throw in the towel after a few seasons.

That means that hobbyists outnumber commercials by at least 20 to 1.

It kinda makes me feel empowered if you know what I mean.

ABF posted some statistics a few months ago, 212,000 total with 200,000 being backyard beeks, 10,000 with under 1000 hives and 2000 with over 1000 hive which were responsible for 60 percent of the coumtrys honey..i can't find the article so i'm going out of memory here..and i have a photographic memory...just no film..

I don't know about others, but at my house I feel like I'm an army of ONE.
Little ol' me, over 100 colonies.

Reminds me of the stats for horse ownership. Compared to several years ago, Less people own horses, but those that do, own MORE horses than they use to. Same amount of horses? Same amount of bees?
