Default Would you believe I got a swarm call today11-2-2013

This afternoon I received a swarm call around 4pm, now it gets dark around 6:30pm or so.
I figured it would be a nest of wasp but went and sure enough there was a cluster of honey bees on a redbud limb.
I used my bee vac for it was faster and brought them home.
It was a cluster around 3 pounds.
I don't know whether the queen was there or not but it was a tight cluster.
I brought them inside the house for tonight for it is suppose to get down to 36 degrees F.
I sprayed them lightly with sugar syrup for feed.
Tomorrow when it warms up I'm going to put them in a 6 frame hive and give them some 2-1 sugar syrup with Pro Health.
Day after tomorrow I plan to merge them with another hive.
I feel that is the only way I can get them ready for winter.
October 2nd is kinda late in my book to get bees to overwinter.
Any suggestions will be greatfully appreiciated.

Sounds like, if there is a queen, it might be a good opportunity to make an indoor observation hive, and feed them all winter. I got two clumps like this last year, but they didn't seem to have a queen. Not sure what makes them do this so late in the year. It is almost like suicide. How far are you from Springfield?

I got a call for a cut-out on Friday. Told them to wait until spring unless they were going to be sprayed in which case I would have done it to get the honey.

I have gotten three unusually late swarms this year, with queens, and none have taken. These might be abandonment swarms rather than reproductive swarms. Overload of mites? This one I picked up on a rainy day after a muggy hot afternoon. The other two were tennis ball size.

I've gotten a couple. Very light hives almost no honey, A few ants start bothering them & away they go.
Caught one twice within a couple weeks, only one has stayed in the box.

Had the same thing last Monday. Told them the same thing you did.

One of those cases with comb, where the landowner assures you "they were not there yesterday." You just have to bite your tongue.

I've tried to hive this swarm twice, but they keep going back under my colony.... They've been hanging out for about 3 1/2 weeks.

capt44...what did you decide? I'd give them a frame of brood and a frame of honey from another hive and see what they do...JMO.

outlaw...Your bees are tired of trying to get into the single bee space you have open. They can't get in! Take the mouse guard off, and open the reducer. You have them choked out. Buttoned them up too soon, and too much.

Don't fight them, go with the flow. Use the bottom board as the top of a regular hive until they get settled on the normal frames.

Sorry for derailing the thread - my husband and I have been scratching our heads about this for a while.

Yes, we have all screened bottom boards. I'd closed them for the season when they swarmed.

Good idea. Will try it if they're still there when we go by this week. They survived a couple freezing nights, windy days, and a week of 50s and rain, so I'd like to save them, if possible.
