Top Bar Hives Now Legal in New Zealand
Just for interest, there has been much debate in my country over Top Bar Hives because the legislation has been that beehives must have moveable frames for inspection. It was written before Top Bars existed.
This has been the cause of a lot of argument etc as Top Bar keepers have thus far been operating outside the law, so often don't register their hives or even mix with other beekeepers and so miss out on proper education.
However the law has now been changed so that bees have to be kept in a hive with moveable frames or COMBS. A good move in my opinion.
People who allow their bees to make a big tangled mass of comb would still be in breach of the law, which is as it should be because the hive cannot be inspected. But hopefully those people will now feel more free to seek help and knowledge to get their hive re-organised.
44 years, been commercial, outfits up to 4000 hives, now 120 hives and 200 nucs as a hobby, selling bees. T (mostly).
