Question Do bees carry propolis back to the hive in their pollen sacs.

I was watching a video of the front of one of my hive with a close up of the entrance. Bees were coming and going. Lots of yellow pollen coming in and then One bee had a big load of amber coloured substance in it's pollen sacs. I'm just wondering if it is Propolis? It was translucent and shinny in appearance. Didn't look at all like what the other bees were bringing in.

I do see bees carrying propolis in their pollen baskets. This is a heavy collection time of year, especially if you have cottonwoods around.

We do have some Cottonwood here, but I don't know if it is abundant.

My bees are out in the grasslands with few trees close. They are collecting goo probably from sow thistles and curleycup gum weed. Really strings out when I tilt a box. bees use whatever is available.

Yes. They can load them, but they need help to unload. It's funny watching them go around trying to find help. Sometimes everyone seems to ignore them...

Sometimes I've watched them on the outside of hives with splayed dovetails at the corners that the bees are trying to propolize. I couldn't be sure if that's what I was seeing, but there were always more then one bee, and the other one would pull at the propolis on the bees legs.

Exactly. They can't get it out themselves, they need help.

That is exactly what I was wondering after watching my video for the 10th time, . How does it get that sticky mess off it's legs? Now I know!

You know what else is kind of funny to watch but sad at the same time. A worker bee trying to evict a Drone by itself. The worker will be on the back of the Done and then at it front trying to drag it out, but the drone just walk right back into the hive with the bee on top of it, only to be dragged back out again.
