Default 1:1 or 2:1 syrup now in Illinois?

I've been feeding 1:1 by volume Msyrup for the last month in an attempt to aide in the drawing out of the last several frames of foundation. Mission accomplished, they have been consuming about 7 quarts of the syrup per week and have drawn out the frames. Now, it is my understanding that 1:1 is better for drawing comb, but requires more energy to store since it needs to be dehydrated. It seems like now would be the ideal time to switch to 2:1 so they can store some if necessary. The hive is one deep, one medium... started from a 10 frame med. nuc in July. Is now a good time to go to 2:1 or should I stay 1:1? Also, should I be using an entrance reducer... currently I am not.

2:1 for feed. The block is up to you. It's going to be 80 next week. You should be getting some aster nectar in now. They are dragging it in here for the past week.

The golden rod has been going for a few weeks now, seems like the asters may be winding down. Will either size reducer protect against mice, or just the smallest opening?

I use a little piece of aluminum flashing, and punch (or cut) a 3/8 inch hole, and nail it with brads or staple it to cover the small opening in the reducer bar. I probably will not put it on until the first night-time temps in the 30's.
