Default Help - Fermentation Odor coming from hive

    Hi,

First year beek here. I have an odor coming from the hive. I did a quick inspection tonight, but I don't see an infestation of hive beetles. It was very hot today, 97 and humid. The bees are bearding and there are a ton hanging out on the top of the inner cover.

Hive is two boxes, a struggle to get to this point. The bottom box is mostly brood frames and they are starting to store honey in the top box. Being a first year, I don't have any spare frames, but I also don't see any issues with the frames that are in there.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? I've read SHB infestation or goldenrod....

    Thanks in advance.

My hives stink too, in my case it is Goldenrod, it smells like sour old gym socks. Or if you wear work boots, the smell you get from them when you take them off at the end of a long hot day.

G-rod. Fermentation has a distant smell, sort of a sharpness like vinegar smell. You guys got some good rain and more coming , should be a great flow in your area lower northeast. I wish i could say the same for kentucky :-(

I, too, vote goldenrod. Think "smelly feet"....like when you first open a bag of Fritos. Once somebody gave me that analogy, I learned to LOVE that smell! It means your bees are packing it away!

if you think you have a problem, Then why not inspect the hive. if there is honey fermenting you will know it when you look at the frames. they will be frothing at the mouth sort of speak,
if there is a mass of dead bees in the bottom decaying amidst the high humidity and temperature you will know that too. It is very likely to be the goldenrod. However why take a wait and see attitude when a thorough inspection will not only ease your mind, but could prevent bigger problems.

I did a quick inspection of the frames in the two boxes. I don't see anything unusual. I ran short on time last night now that it is getting darker earlier. I need to check in the bottom this weekend. The odor seems to be coming from the bottom board.

    NJ,
I am on Long Island by you. Goldenrod is in full swing now. You get what you want from a smell. I think it smells like a mix of molasses and butterscotch. I can smell it a long way from my hives. I only worry if I don,t smell it in the fall. That means I will have to feed and feed fast. I have been caught by early cold and it,s a lot harder for the bees to store the sugar when it,s cold.
    Good luck

Did you check the brood boxes? If it's SHB larvae, that's where they start.... they infestation smells like fermentation...
