Default Does anyone know how OA kills mites?

Read lots of material that speaks to OA killing Varroa & Tracheal mites, but have found nothing that states HOW it does it. Anyone know & can point to knowledge base?

    Thanks!

According to Randy Oliver, exactly how OA kills mites is not clear.

    Unanswered Questions About Oxalic

    Mode of Action

Many plants use oxalic acid, and/or its oxalate salts, to discourage insects and large animals from eating them. This leads us to the hope that OA might be a long-term “organic” weapon for mite control. Funny thing is, no one really knows how OA kills mites, although there is a great deal of conjecture in the literature! One might assume that its mode of action would be similar to that of formic acid, which forms a vapor at hive temperatures. According to Imdorf (Anonymous 1999), formic kills by “respiratory inhibition,” although he doesn’t cite a source for this statement.

Doesn't Randy state, that possibly when the OA vapours cool down they form crystals that coat everything in the hive. That these crystals are just large enough to effect the mites but not the bees. These crystals are sharp and would damage the mites body, the same or similar to how glass shards would cut us up.

I've read something from a tradesman warning about the sharp crystals that OA can form.

only thing i have to hand about Oxalic Acid looks like it burns the poor varroa's little legs off lol (a painful death is too good for em )
nanetti did loads of research with OA try looking for more studies i guess might answer your question in more detail.

As the OA solution dries, it can form hazardous sharp crystals.
