Default Possible Way to Encourage Building Straight Comb

Today, I discovered a way to encourage a new package/swarm to build straight comb. It seems to involve using one or more starter bars with vertically hanging wires. I've diagrammed this type of bar on my blog. It seemed like a novel approach (at least I've never read about it before), so I thought I'd share it since a lot of people appear to have difficulty getting bees off to a good start.

You can see this technique at: http://happyhourtopbar.blogspot.com/...-building.html

    Cheers!

Hmmm, don't know, but it sure looks like it'll work.

You sure they didn't use some wired foundation?

Hmm... Good question. I don't know. I guess I'll have to ask him.

In my experience the wires won't matter one way or the other. Bees will incorporate them into the comb if they decide to build the comb there. But if they decide to build it somewhere else, they just ignore them. The wires will give you some support.

The best way to insure straight comb is to put an empty bar between two straight brood combs. It almost never fails.

What you described in your blog sounds like he used a piece of starter foundation to start the nuc. The 2 pieces of wood would wedge the foundation between them holding it in place. I do it myself starting hives from swarms although i don't use wired foundation.

Yes, looking at those photos again, I think you all must be right. It probably is foundation. Sigh. I thought I might have found something new.
