Default Thinking out of the box....

I placed two hives along a host's driveway. They did not want the hive to extend over the edge of the narrow planting bed, so I made bottoms with the entrance on the long side. I sometimes even impress myself. Hives are all re-purposed rough redwood, jumbo depth frames.

Nice thinking! But it's still a box.

I bought hives off a guy in TN who made them that way. Even had modified telescoping tops that created an "awning" over the entrance. He claimed it gave the bees better ventilation, as there was a larger opening than the standard way. I didn't notice any difference myself.
