I chose 4, but really it is 3 foot 8. Less wasted wood.

Yes, I think mine are 44", but I figured rounding up or down to the nearest foot would make the poll a lot easier.

Mine are 60" long (inside dimensions), X 13" usable top bars (15" total length) with a 4" width at the bottom. I use scrap roofing metal for lids with 1" thick high density foam for roof lining.

Montyb - how heavy is that 2x12 set up. In my mind it should only be like a 8 footer 1x12 extra. Can you move the thing easily.

48" inside, w/ 17" bars, & made with 2x12 lumber. I can carry the hive body with the 2x4 legs attached from the garage to the bee yard (~50 yards) but it's hard. Might have to find a better way; I'm not getting any younger. Once sited, I don't move them though.

Mine are actually 42". I made the main body from 2 x material left over from house construction. They are strong and well made, but too heavy to be moved very easily. I had some flooding where my pond rose and put about 24" of water under my hives. I had to get my john boat up close, and lever them up on a pair of 2 x 4s and float them closer to high ground.
From there I had to carry them to a new spot. One had a strong hive with a lot of comb and stores. That sucker was heavy.

Didn't put it on scale but wheeled it out of house on wheelbarrow. Don't have to worry about it blowing over. Built another for next spring and doubled the 2x12s so walls are 3 inches. Hope they think it is a thick tree laying on its side. Monty in Marquette.

I don't think that I would go that route. If you use standard 1x and then put a layer of the 1 inch blue foam they sell in 4x8 sheets you will have a higher R value (probably by 2) and have 1/4 the weight versus going with double thickness 2x. Besides, what do you make the bars from, 4x4's?
