Default Lavender & Coriander (Cilantro) for Mite control??

I have read several references to Lavender & Coriander being good to control mites but I have not been able to find more details. I'd love to know more. Do the plants need to be close to the hives? Is it the scent of the plants or the pollen & nectar that is effective?

Thyme is a great mite control and it smells great in the hives. It is sold as Tymol.

What about planting Thyme around the hives?
