    Default How and When

do you collect Propolis??? I have a trap but have no idea when is the best time to do this. Not completely sure of how to set the hive to collect it. My hives are all new this year. Just put honey supers on the first one. Other 3 only have one large brood super. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
A friend works at a botanical garden and said they would buy all I could supply. Told them I have to first learn about it.

You put the trap on the top (under the inner cover) and crack open the inner cover or pro it up a little bit, so they see the light. They will plug up the holes on the trap with propolis. August is usually the best time to do this. Make sure the wider part of the opening on the trap is towards the bees.

When you take the trap off, put it in the freezer and then bend it to get the propolis off. Otherwise it will be a sticky mess.

I started fooling with a couple of traps this year. I'm getting about 4 oz per trap per month. Another bonus of the traps is that they make a decent inner cover.

Yep, I've heard to stick the trap in the freezer and crack like an ice tray.
cg3 - do you empty it then put it right back on?? I take it you don't use the inner cover with yours.
I guess August it is. Not too far away.
Thanks again for everyones input. Really appreciate it.

I have a spare that I put on when I take the loaded one off. So far I've got a pound and a half or so with no plan on what to do with it.
