I would say it is the same for most of the country, spring. But saying that I would start learning as much as possible. Find a Bee Club or a beekeeper and learn first hand.

    welcome allan!

i would say the best time to start one is when the first blooms appear in the spring. in northeast alabama this year that was mid-march to early april.

in your part of the state it's probably a few weeks earlier.

it may be hard to find bees for sale that early though, unless you can find someone who sells overwintered nucs.

Whenever you can! Probably the easiest time is more or less the months of April/May.

If you were ready to go already you might be able to get bees still this season - you would have to mess with them and baby them a lot to get them ready and through the winter, but you would learn a lot if you did.

Read a lot. Join a club. Get yourself a suit and a smoker, and a hive setup. Put out the word that you don't have bees but you would like to get started, and sooner or later you will get lucky. At least when spring rolls around you will be ready.

    Alan,

If you're serious about beekeeping, forget Alabama and move to the bee capital of the world, California!
You can start a colony here anytime.

    Alan,
I was in your shoes last year. I live in Decatur, Alabama, and I met a bee keeper that was willing to show me around a hive for the summer. She told me of this Symposium at Calhoun College last year. I went to all of the beginner classes to see if I liked it.

We are lucky up here that Lindsey Trousdale is local and makes great equipment. (I didn't pay shipping on any woodware!) Here is his site.

I don't know how far away you are from Decatur/Huntsville.
The Madison County Beekeepers association also held free beginner classes in the winter (Jan-Feb) That i took to help me out. Maybe your local bee club has classes.
You are better off than me in that you found the forum before you stated up. I found it after my third week.

Welcome allan. This site is great for asking lots of questions. Don't be shy. This is my first year and this site has been helpful. 2 resources that really gave me a good beginning understanding is the book "Beekeeping for Dummies" and this video series free on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ujrdw...77154933503FD0. It's old but pretty complete. And definitely hook up with a bee club and any experienced folks you can find like Hoss is recommending.
