Default Has anyone tried a briefcase scale on a hive?

Looking for a easy, cheaper hive scale. Has anyone tried something like this?

$90 receiving scale. They seem to be pretty rugged / rustproof, and fully mechanical. The slanted window looks like it will be visible even under a hive. Unfortunately, both of these top out at 250 pounds. Do you think it would work out?

Jon, I think the hive would be wobbly on the scale as the scale dimensions are so small. Also at close to $90 I think you might find an old farm scale at less than that. I think I got mine for less than $50.

Adrian: Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to find a feed scale in New York City; fancy clothing stores are probably using them for window displays. That's a good point about the size--it seems like other people have used similar sized scales before (http://www.nhbeekeepers.org/Hive_Scale.pdf/) but those look pretty wobbly too! I could loosely rachet a strap around the hive as a just-in-case.

Dan: I've read that you need to be careful with electronic scales, since most of them don't handle a constant load well and can misread when the temp. changes. Do you know if that one has those problems?

Sorry I don't know. Been reading about them a couple years casually, will be waiting to hear how it goes for you.

I have this Luggage scale. http://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Preci...=luggage+scale. Today I bought "L" shaped brackets to attach to rear of the hive. Here, I will attach the scale and lift to get a repeatable, hopefully, partial hive weight. At some point will need an extension as a lever to reduce the weight load because the scale only does 110 lbs. Will post the result. Hope it works.
