My wife and I live in a suburban neighborhood and currently have two hives on our half acre lot. Before we received our colonies I was very concerned with how our neighbors would react to us keeping bees. I informed the ones that we are friendly with that we were getting into the hobby and most were interested and even excited about it. Since we've gotten our bees up and running I've tried to make a point of having them individually come over and see the hives and alleviate any fears or anxiety about them being in the neighborhood. So, the other day I was going to open one hive and check on a queen cell we had found during the last inspection which had an egg in it. I wanted to see if the girls were superceding or just being prepared since they have such a new queen. While getting ready to get into the hive, I noticed my neighbors outside doing yardwork. I walked over and asked if one of them would like to help out with the inspection. We only have two suits so only one gets to go. The husband looked at his wife and said go for it. She came over, suited up and dove into the hive with me. Since I was originally only going in to look at that one qc and I knew exactly which box it was in and frame it was on it should have been a quick in and out five minutes tops. However, since I had my neighbor with me, and she has never seen inside a hive I ended up going frame by frame through all three boxes showing her the ins and outs of the hive. She had a ton of questions that I was surprised to find I was easily able to answer. We only stopped the "tour" once I was able to show her the queen on the second to last frame in the last box. I know going through the hive like that wasn't the best idea since they had a full inspection four days before but I really don't care. Being able to educate a neighbor so thoroughly and get them so interested in the hives to me is worth whatever setbacks or issues I may have with the girls caused by the frequent disruption. The neighbor said after we were done that it was one of the coolest experiences in her life I figured I would share this since most neighbor experiences you read about on here are negative. Oh, and the qc was completely empty, guess they're happy with the current.
