Question Adding the 4th medium to early?

    My setup:
    All mediums
    Foundationless
    Bay Area, California

The 3rd medium has 6-7 build out frames and the hive looks strong and healthy.
Over the next week high temetures are forecast, I was thinking to add the 4th medium early to help the bees with the heat. More space, better air flow. Also worried about swarms.

One the other hand I read that space mangagment is critical and to that point should I not wait one more week till they have 8-10 frames build out?

Adding the poll for fun. And I wanted to try it out.

5th year beek here, so maybe you'll hear from someone with more experience. I would say add the super or you are likely to trigger a swarm. I've tried to stay way ahead of my 6 hives this year, ran out of supers, harvested 19 gallons so far and still had one swarm. The only problem was that some queens were laying up in the honey supers for a while (no excluders), but they have been moving down.

3rd year beekeeper here, East Bay; just added the 4th super yesterday....had built comb though so they quickly filled the 3 brood boxes. Surplus boxes also have comb. Give them something to do...

Intersting. Votes are split. So many do believe to only add a box when they are out of room. Great insight. BTW I'm a 3rd year beekeeper.

In Menlo Park you have a never ending trickle flow from now until October when the Eucalyptus starts blooming. Keep ahead of them, less so with foundation than drawn comb.

    Really.

Bees never put nectar in supers that are stored in the barn.

I've found that when using foundationless frames, adding supers early doesn't carry the same issues as foundation or drawn comb since there are no attractants for SHB or moths.
