    Default Entrance reducer

Trying my first hive this year. Have had them sixteen days now and have allot of eggs, larva, and capped brood . Was wondering how long I should keep the entrance reducer on. About a 2.5 or 3 inch opening right now. Thanks.

I am no expert but I would keep it in until the first box is drawn out & see if you are getting a traffic jam. The smaller the entrance the easier they can protect them selves. I have Two double deeps that I leave the entrance less than half open but they also have a small upper entrance

I keep the entrance reducer on when I hive my packages mainly to help them defend the hive. Then as they grow I will open to the next bigger size, maybe at 5 weeks, etc. Then in winter I go back to the small reducer.
