Default Single Deep + honey supers?

I've always run double deep bodies and medium supers. Lost 18 of 20 colonies this year. I'm starting with single deeps and packages.

I'd like to get some honey this year and am tempted to just put supers on single deeps. That means less stores for winter but I've had little luck so far keeping them alive. I'm outside Chicago and we've had a miserably long winter. I think the flow is on right now.

If anybody has honey supers on singles, what do you do in the fall? Add another deep? Just accept losses?

    Which way to jump?
Basic, elemental / instinct to survive
Stirs the higher passions / Thrill to be alive

Most of the pros run single deeps with and excluder for honey production. the key is you need drawn supers to do that, undrawn frames above and excluder almost never draw out.
My singles from packages started March 28th are on the 2nd or 3rd supers. I am a bit south of you but you should be great especialy if you had drawn comb.

Thanks! That's what I'll do. You rock.

Singles will likely not make it through winter.
